Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no comment on this. The management structure of the team stays unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
