This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
