"When are you speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated fans have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos often show them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to start a band."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The group have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project came out of a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international following.

However the band will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
