The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
